The areas of emphasis are selected by consensus of national, state or local leagues. An attempt is made to focus our combined efforts on a few issues to more effectively change its outcome. Through grassroots efforts, coordinating with like minded organizations and lobbying we exert effort of the political process.

Democracy doesn't just happen. We must work at it. Citizens must shoulder much of the responsibility for becoming engaged in the process. At the same time, policy makers can and do have a significant impact on citizen involvement through legislation, policy directives and court rulings.

The LWVMI's Citizen Access to Government Report Card reviews governmental actions which impact citizen participation and gages that impact —positive or negative. Kalamazoo Area League members were instrumental in promoting the Access to "Government Report and have participated in the development of both the first and second editions.
