(press release dated December 3, 2024) | LANSING, Mich. – Today, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson testified before the Michigan House Committee on Elections in support of the Michigan Voting Rights Act (MVRA), which will expand voting rights, strengthen democracy in our state, and make good on the promise of the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution– that no citizen can be denied the right to vote. Specifically, the MVRA wouldl:
- Prohibit voter denial, dilution, and/or suppression.
- Require and expand the jurisdictions that must translate election-related information into languages other than English to ensure that language minority citizens in Michigan have an equal opportunity to participate in the voting process.
- Enhance and clarify protections for voters with disabilities or who otherwise need assistance to vote.
Now that the House Elections Committee took action to send the MVRA for House second reading, an Action Alert will be coming out to League members in Michigan to support passage of the Michigan Voting Rights Act. The Action Alert can be shared with family and friends. Encourage them to support MVRA too.
Wednesday, December 4th, is Lobby Day in Lansing when League members and other state partners supporting voting rights will lobby for passage of the Michigan Voting Rights Act.
